There's another cheap version of the Theragun which has a different style housing (kind of a triangle) which actually works as a proper thumper and not just an empty threat to a muscle, it's problem is the motor is too week in such that when you apply pressure to try to get down into the muscle it can cause a bitter a freak out, making it misbehave, however…If you hold the gun at an angle, pressing the "knob" more sideways into the muscle, it actually performs better. Lighter pressure can be applied "straight on."

The percussion guns available out there feel overengineered, due to the microcontroller and have the tendency to die unexpectedly. I suspect the microcontroller loses its programming. It's a pity because the these are generally gentler than a variable speed reciprocating saw cum massaging attachments.
