Beautiful and Expensive or Junky and Expensive? Starrett vs. Cle-Line. I made a new Ruler to go with the first one. It'll get a chuckle out of the lads at the shop. https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/519921651/welders-ruler?ref=listings_manager_grid

I purchased several of these starrett tap handles a while ago, and upon revisiting this video I 100% agree with you AvE…the adjustment tube on every single one has corroded and discolored on the end where it’s not blued. Still a damn fine tool though.
I was blown away the first time I had one of these in my had. They look nice but more importantly feel 100% quality. A ratcheting gear wrench can handle more torque though. The moveable jaw is a weak link on these. To be fair I was tapping something I shouldn’t have been and snapping 1/2-13 taps but it left me feeling disappointed by how much better a much cheaper tool handled that load. They are an American brand with some manufacturing still here in the states but I just haven’t seen anything in the last 5 years I would buy from them if someone else manufactured something similar.
Yeah right I find it amazing that you’re gonna sit there and try to pick away at that Starrett tap wrench out there that even comes close to the quality of that wrench…
One is a piece of junk/Sh*t and the other one is a high quality work of art…
Why do all the taps fall out of my horrible freight tap wrench?
A good vid that stands the test of time sir. 5yrs later and I went to give it a like but I already had.
My grandfather was part of the international association of machinists and he had a lot of starret tools he gave me, I have worth of 5000$ of starret tools
Also every tools he gave me are made from Gray Canada, starret, Fuller
All of his tools he gave me are made in Canada or USA
I love my Starrett tools !!!
However, those from 50 years ago were of much better quality that the current manufacturer. Same goes for many other manufactures of quality tools. It's the little things, like lack of cleanliness, and sharply machined surfaces that have caused the quality to decline in my opinion. It seems that back when people cared about what they produced. Now they just toss it in the box, and sell it !!!
I have several old Greenlee tap wrenches that are most excellent, with color case hardened bodies, that are especially nice, especially in the larger sizes ( Abom size !!! LOL !!! )

I don't think the Cle-Line was made in the US. I have a Chinese No.0 whose construction looks identical to the CL down to the static jaw being retained by the handle and not a set screw. I paid ~$6 for mine solely out of curiosity. I have a good number of quality tap wrenches/handles including a Starrett 91C. It's a different world.
I just bought a Starrett 91C……marked Aug 2 1949 and the mans name.
Still wonderful feel. It’s already in my will.
this in Italy here cost much less and looks better than the black one
The dowel that retains the jaw on the starrett wrench is a through hole and dowel is short enough to be contained in jaw pin, so to remove jaw tappy tap tap the dowel flush, remove jaw, tap pin out of jaw, reinstall jaw and tappy tap tap the pin back in.
Damn fart smellers
I'd return the first one.
When it’s Starrett it’s “surface rust” when it’s anything else it’s “oh it’s rusted to shEEEEITE”
