What does 'digital' motor mean? I still don't know. Judging from the control waveform, Dyson doesn't either. We'll look at the Dyson motor from the inside out. We'll also do some test firing of the control board and motor on the bench and use our trusty Rigol to see what the motor controller is doing.

AvE maybe you could answer this question I’m confused on. There is a couple companies that make mini cordless “air dusters” that use the same fan/motor, which has inspired me to try to make my own. This same “digital” motor can be found on the usual Chinese export sites for cheap. The issue I can seem to answer is how to control them. Could I use a generic BLDC controller? Or not? Because these motors technically run at very high DC voltages, but that begs the question, how are these cordless air dusters powering them? Or are they just using a basic BLDC controller pushing an obvious lower voltage sacrificing some RPMs which is not a huge sacrifice because it’s still turning in the high thousands. Very jumbled question but basically in a short format, how are companies putting the same fan module in a cordless appliance maybe running at 12v for example driving it?

As a magnet specialist, I can confirm the magnet on the rotor is a neodymium multipole ring magnet.

A key to the high efficiency of this fan is a very low clearance between fan blades' tips and the chassis. That lowers the turbulent air flow formed at the blades' tips to absolute minimum. Bigger clearance and it would be as turbulent and as shitty as it is in the case of, say, PC cooling fans. That requires though an extremely precise machining and a very careful assembly but allows high power output. In overall, a really cool fan; too bad they don't do at least remotely precise bigger, cooling fans as it's in the case of this specimen. Thanks for disassembling and showing us this aircraft-grade fan.

That impeller needs to be driven by a brushless motor, and mounted in an RC jet!!
Might not fly all that fast through the hair [sorry], but would look ‘seksy as fu**’ ?
