First thing I do is tap on the starter cuz my batteries are good and the terminals are clean and protected, And I rotate the trickle charger round n round. That's about the only thing I got on this guy, rest everything's a mess around here. ๐๐ค
AvE i have to tell ya that if you are really as spooked by sparks as you appear to be over the years of taking your classes that my kind and clan wouldnโt be able to resist setting you up for a laugh every chance we got, no offense but guy will be boys.
You fucking wuss! A 15 year old would have clamped it on and held on come hell or high water! Or of course it flew straight out of his mitts and got the split right between the eyes, but that's 15 year olds for ya! Keep your duck anywhere but a vice!
Please don't spread or continue the wrong belief that patina on the commutator segments is bad. In fact, that is NECESSARY for fair longevity of both the commutation and the brush life. It provides the lubrication that well running and low sparking likes. It is formed in use with help from atmospheric moisture. That also explains why you cannot use brushed DC motors in vacuum chambers. There is no moisture in the vacuum. Same for space applications. Or more to the point, you cannot use such motors with carbon brushes, You have to switch to some other brush materials, like silver alloys, which have their own limitations and drawbacks.
I'm a motorcycle tech and those starters can pull some mean amount of amps especially for a big 4-cyl engine. i don't normally service them i just replace at great cost 3-600 doll hairs. they drive the crank normally through a reduction slash damping system to reduce brackin shit if the engine is a bit out of tune or has an uncooperative moment in it's combustion cycle. thanks for the vid!
I once swapped out the starter motor on a Jeep Wrangler that had crapped out in a Wendy's parking lot. It was only after I'd finished, and failed to crank the engine over that it occurred to me to check the lead from the battery. What I'm saying is "check the battery leads first" is possibly the best piece of advice it is possible to give someone.
When I jump test a starter I place the starter in a vice. I was hoping you could show us how to test forย a shorted armature with a 120 volt light bulb,,,, yes, I know the brush dust polluted inside the armature can show a short. I throw armatures in a dishwasher to clean them,ย allow them to dry out then test again.

Bike engines have a roller ramp clutch inside the engine case. There is no sliding pinion.
Well.. fuckin nora.
Perfect timing on this video. Headed out to my city of scrap to make an el cheapo crash victim I adopted chooch today.
what hundreds of amps are you talking about… the fuse will be at most 20A…
You couldn't be an electrician, one short circuit spark in a 20 or 30 amp branch circuit would give you a heart attack.

Man that's a big starter motor….the one on my Gixxer seems tiny compared to that.
Holds up better than the rectifriers though.
Having purchased a Japanese motorcycle starter motor I can confirm they are a fricking expensive part.
funy fukr
First! Oh wait… Im 5 days late…
