ERATTA: I probably busted that nut on the new saw in the previous teardown. I gave it a solid thumping in the vise, and since it's not threaded I probably broke it myself. Thanks for pointing out my error!
We inspect the old USA built 77 and compare it to a brand new Chinese version.

You probably cracked it when you were banging on it in the other video

I wonder if that cracked when ya whacked it to try to unscrew it. So, if that "nut" is keyed, how does it come off?

Metal bodies were no problem for me. I wore the old US military style black (thinner) work gloves from the local Army-Navy store. This was before the death of US garment making gave us modern work gloves but they worked well.

My question is: Due to the saw being worm drive, how do you manage to spin the blade by hand? Would the worm and wheel not “lock” and prevent that very thing??

Just ingest some caffeine, to spark up the cracks in yir cranial folds and give the blade guard the zapper. Gota protect that saw blade from yir fingers.

Maybe too late to the party, but could you have cracked the nut in the previous video when you had tried to loosen it with a hammer and punch? Seeing as it cracked right at the keyway? It looks like it is designed to be tightened with a special wrench that engages in four points, you tried to loosen it at one, and it is only a sintered part… Just spitballing. Could be it's locktited, too…

Highe pb and sn makes it brittle. Usually any combo over .14 will make it wantbto shatter if dropped
