Hangover Saturday, WARNING: pinch faced Church quilting bee types, salty language ahead. Say hello to 40 mm thick hard AR 400 plate. It's not something you want to drill with HSS drill bits. In the name of FUN, we put a few unwilling victims on the alter for sacrifice to Vulcan.
In this totally biased review of various suppliers of twist drills, one brand came out on top.
Surprisingly, some of the most expensive USA made bits from Acklands are worse than el-cheapo offshore bits from Costco.
The most gorilla proof twist drill I've found is Walter. Norseman makes a good bit too. Any other bits you'd like me to test while I still have that 100 pound plate up on the mill?
Like the vids? Got pocket change? You can help keep the cart rollin'!

I would have liked to see a center drill first, just like you would if it had been a real job. And I can hear your rippems are too high for steel as hard as prom dick.
Goddamn lol this man kills me. Here I am also hungover just trynna figure out what bit I can use to drill through my rockers on the springer and heโs got my chucklin. My head hurts sir
This is a great video on how not to drill hard metal.
Good video on which one made the hole @AvE
As a full time heavy diesel mechanic (when Iโm not driving the thing,) gloves have saved my fingers and hands many many times. Heavy metal objects donโt give a damn about your hands.
Too many RPMs, do you understand cutting speed!

Iโd love to see this video redone with Ti-N and M35 and M42 bits
Armor plate will work harden. Never stop drilling after starting. Slow rpm auto feed works best.
Would love to see how they are now if you sharpen them all and try again. AKA, can they all be restored, and do they cut as well, or better, than new?
AR400 isn't that hard to drill through, your vid is a pretty good guide on how to do the opposite of all the right things to make her chooch though ๐
* Try not to drill right on the edge of a flame cut piece of steel unless you have to
* If you have to drill there – anneal with a rosebud till it loses magnetism, then air cool
* Drill a pilot if you can help it
* (A lot) Less speed and a lot more feed. Start around 70rpm and feed as hard as you without snapping bits
* Flood coolant is best, but a little spray bottle of coolant will get you there without making a mess
* If you can resharpen, 135* and a low clearance angle helps
* Split point is convenient but you'll get a lot more holes out of a standard point
Looks like you snapped the corners off the second bit straight up by drilling into the hardened steel left by the first hole. If you gotta redrill a hardened hole then anneal if you can or go straight to carbide.
Keep your stick on the ice and watch out for that Tokillya. You'd get my vote for president!
Say what you will about Chineseium, but I just got some Chineseium drawer slides.. man the thing is strong and heavy. Dropped a set on my toes accidentally and it HURTS. But it felt smooth and solid and only costs something like 3 dollars each.
You run that 1st drill way to fast.
What about the cuntsen targlide
Please adopt me!
Have you tried cryo treating your drill bits? You get 50% more use before dulling. ๐๐๐
