Ummm… Just to be the skeptic's skeptic; are you sure the chucks you're dissecting and testing are using the same design as the ones being promoted to have this additional "lock" feature? Granted, I'm behind the curve in my drill collection, as most of mine have pixie bridge tails with chuck-tightening tools taped to them, and the ones that rely on boxed pixies, don't click when I tighten them, but perhaps you've also missed an iteration and pulled the wrong patent.
In the workshop whenever a person smelled " burning , burnt , smoke , etc " the person was heavily encouraged to go searching for the source of the scent . We didn't care how long they took …. we preferred it . If one of the senior staff saw you looking around they also helped , no pressure or repercussions . " find it " The impercations were enough to justify Sometimes the neighbors burnt rubbish .

I have never seen anyone turn a chuck backwards one click to "lock it". Anyone that Stoopid shouldn't be allowed near tools anyway.
